This is the guide that you will be using for your Nursing courses here at SUNY Delhi. Here you will find information on specific courses, general information about searching for and using library resources.

Assignment: Ethics of Genetic Testing

For this assignment, the recommended search tool is the library's MILO search. Use the search box or link above, then click on Advanced Search to set up your search as shown here:

Typing in ethic* with an asterisk (*) searches multiple versions of the word: ethics, ethical, ethically, etc. This search should get you started with several articles that discuss both pros and cons of this type of testing.

If you want to narrow your search, click on "Add a new line." This will add another search box to your setup.

Some ideas for terms to add to the third search box include: quality of life, psychological distress, early treatment or early detection

There's plenty out there on this topic, so don't give up! Use the contact info or chat box on the right side of this page if you get stuck.

Suggested Search Strategies

In MILO, clicking on "Advanced Search" next to the main search box opens up multiple search boxes instead of just one. This can help you organize your search terms in a way that will give you better results. For this assignment, try it like this:

  1. Type your chosen ethical issue into the first search box. Some of the choices for this assignment are more straightforward to search than others. Here are some tips for specific topics from the list:
    • For lateral violence, try searching lateral or horizontal violence (See Tip #3 on the General Search Tips tab to learn more about using "OR" in your search).
    • For communication barriers in the hierarchy between providers and nurses, try searching: interprofessional communication
    • For workplace violence, if you choose to specify verbal or physical, use the word "and" to search, like this: workplace violence and verbal.
  2. In the second search box, type: ethic* to get all variations on the word (ethics, ethical, ethically, etc. See Tip #2 on the General Search Tips tab to learn more about using asterisks)
  3. In addition to the usual search options (publication date in the last five years, peer-reviewed checkbox selected), your search might look like this:
