PubMed

PubMed is a free search tool provided by the National Library of Medicine.

You must access PubMed using the links on this page or from the Resnick Library website in order to see links to full-text content from our library where available. Click here to see a video on finding articles using PubMed.

Search PubMed for Level 1 & 2 Evidence

1. Enter your PICO search terms into the PubMed search box.

2. Look to the left of your list of results for a section labeled "Article types." Click on "Customize" and scroll down to check the box for Randomized Controlled Trial.

in left menu, customize is circled and shows selection of randomized controlled trial from pop-up list of article types

3. *Important* The previous step only displays Randomized Controlled Trial as a choice in the list of Article types on the left. Once you have done this, you still have to click on Randomized Controlled Trial to limit your results to this type of research.

Randomized Controlled Trial is circled as it appears in Article types limiters on left

3. Review your updated list of results. When you find an article you are interested in, click on the title. PubMed provides access to a number of free full text articles. Some examples of links to free articles may look like this:

Free full text buttons from Hindawi and PMC  free full text buttons from publisher and PMC

You will see many other links that will take you to the publisher's website and ask for payment for full-text access. If you find one of these, DO NOT pay for articles. Many of these articles may be available through our library. Ask a librarian if there are any other options for obtaining that article.
