Transitions to Professional Nursing Practice (NURS 300): Role Development Assignment

E-books to Explore

These books give a great looks into many different nursing roles, as well as the education and skills required for each. When looking at the full text of the book, look for the "Search within" feature in the menu on the left and use it to jump to the section of the book about your chosen role.

Search MILO

MILO is the library's super-search tool. When you search MILO, you can get books, articles, e-books, and other kinds of sources, all in one place. Give it a try! Click here to link directly to MILO, without using the search box.

Suggested Search Strategy

In CINAHL, clicking on "Advanced Search" under the main search box opens up three search boxes instead of just one. This can help you organize your search terms in a way that will give you better results. For assignment #2, try it like this:

  1. Type your chosen role (school nurse, forensic nursing, specialty clinical expert, etc.) into the first search box.
If your role includes the word "nurse" or "nursing," type it in as nurs* to get all variations on the word (see Tip #2 on the General Search Tips tab to learn more about using asterisks)
  2. In the second search box, type: skills or responsibilities (include the word "or"-- see Tip #3 on the General Search Tips tab)
  3. In addition to the usual search options (publication date in the last five years, peer reviewed checkbox selected), you search should look like this:
three advanced search boxes with terms entered as described in steps 1 and 2

Not enough results?

Try MILO, the library's super search! MILO searches all library databases at once to give you broader results. Some tips for searching MILO:

  1. Start your search by typing a few keywords into the search box on the left of this page.
  2. Once you get your results, use the limiters on the left to narrow your results to the last five years and peer-reviewed articles (click on "Refine" to apply the date limits once you type in the appropriate years):                 limiters for Peer-reviewed Journals and publication dates
  3. MILO has several different options for connecting to full-text materials. Look for links "Download PDF" or "Read article," which are shortcuts that will get you to the text in fewer clicks!
