Search Tips & Examples

For this assignment, the most effective search strategy varies a lot depending on which disorder you have chosen to research. However, here are some general tips that should help:

  • Don't discount articles whose titles look very technical and/or specific. These articles often start with a basic overview of the disease process and can have the more general information you need in the introduction section.
  • Click on "Advanced Search" to open multiple search boxes instead of one. Then, type the name of your disorder in the top box, and a specific aspect of the assignment requirements in the second box. Here are some examples:advanced search for prader-willi syndrome and pathophysiology               advanced search for huntington's disease and diagnosis
  • Some of the disorders used in this assignment have multiple names or abbreviations. When searching for one of these, type the word "or" in between the different names, or full name/abbreviation. Examples:
    • severe combined immunodeficiency or SCID
    • autism or autism spectrum disorders or ASD
