Exotic Animals (Lariviere, VETS 247): The Assignment

This guide will help students in Professor Lariviere's Exotic Animals class (Vets 247), to complete their research assignment/presentation.

Assignment Description

From Professor Lariviere:

You will research a topic of your choice and create a presentation which will be presented in class.  Each student will prepare a presentation on the topic of their choice that pertains to Exotic Animal Medicine and Nursing.  The goal here is to have fun and get some experience researching a subject you are interested in.   

THIS IS NOT A NATURAL HISTORY PRESENTATION.  Your presentation should primarily focus on medical care and nursing.  This assignment is to allow you to investigate an interest you have to a deeper level of understanding.  The subject of your presentation should be approved by Professor Lariviere prior to research.

 

  • Students must submit a bibliography of resources (APA Format) that includes at least: 2 books, 2 articles in national journals, and one web site (domain .edu or .org).  (Due 3/24) Assistance with research can be obtained by contacting the Resnick Library staff.  On 2/10 our class will be meeting with librarian Steve Dixon. 
  • Students will also submit a 1 page written summary of what will be covered in the presentation (Due 4/14).
  • Each student will create an 10-15 minute presentation to be given during class time to relay the information they have researched in whatever manner they wish (Power point, video, lecture, etc. feel free to get creative!).  Presentations will be given during weeks 13 and 14.  Presentations should be submitted to VH prior to presenting your topic. (Due 4/27)

Zoonotic Disease Project

ZOONOTIC DISEASE PROJECT   --- DUE 2/10

To further understand common and important zoonotic diseases, we will be working individually to research specific zoonotic diseases.  Each student will be assigned a zoonotic disease (Thursday Feb 3) and conduct research about that disease/organism.  Topics that should be covered include:

·       Agent/Pathogen

·       Animal Host

·       Transmission/ Risk of Exposure

·       Disease in animals – Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment

·       Disease in humans – Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment

·       Prevention of disease

·       Recent outbreaks or current news about the disease. 

You will create a mini-presentation (3-5 min) -- PPT, Google Slides etc...-- that can be uploaded or linked to the Vancko Hall course for grading purposes.  You will give your presentation to the class on Thursday 2/10.
