Hi everybody! This guide was made for students in Professor Tessier's ARTS 300 course, Art and Health. Here you will find resources that will guide you as you are researching to complete the assignments for the course.
Section 2b: Draft Research and References Slides:
In-depth research will be presented with a minimum of 5 PowerPoint slides, in-bullet citations, at least two images, and a minimum of five cited references with one of these being a primary source about the artist, and two being primary sources focused on the theme (see below).
What to include in the research:
At least two images (images vary by theme; examples include but are not limited to: images of historical contexts, photographs of the artist, images of the proposed location, graphs of historical data regarding the health issue, other artworks by the artist).
Two+ slides of required biographical research about selected artist and about the artwork using a minimum of two sources for this section, *with 1 of these being a primary source about the artist’s life. Be sure to cover:
Biography of the artist: Please provide biographical information about the artist such as where and when they were born/died and milestones in their life. Explain the development of the artist such as schooling/training/influences. What other notable works were created by this artist and how do they compare/contrast with your selection? Optional questions: How did the prevailing religion, politics, state of healthcare, and/or economics of the period impact the artist? What were the artist’s goals for this or other works?
Artwork Style and background information: What style(s) is this artwork? Is this the only style used by this artist? What media is the work? How big is it? Describe who or what is illustrated. Optional questions: How do other notable artworks explored in lecture that were created in this same period or region compare/contrast with your selected work? Who commissioned the work (name the patron or funders) and why was it made? What did critics/contemporaries say about this work or others by this artist. Have there been any significant changes to the artwork over time (i.e., has it been modified or restored)?
Three+ slides about your selected theme using a minimum of three sources for this section, *with 2 of these being primary sources. Be sure to cover the following for your selected theme:
Reforms in Healthcare theme 1: Describe the history of healthcare in the location of interest during the period the work was created, explaining in detail the health issue being faced. Explain in detail what reform was needed and why. Provide supportive statistics/data. Detail how the artwork advocates for a specific reform/change.
Identity of Nurses or Healthcare Professionals theme 2: Describe the history of healthcare/veterinary science during the period and in the region the work was created and articulate how this artwork conveys an influential, unique historical perception of Nursing or Veterinary Science. Research how the public perceived Nurses/Veterinarians in this period. Find data about the number of Nurses/Vets at this time, their training, public perception of the occupation, etc. If historical symbols are used to communicate this unique identity, use research to explain what they may have meant in the given period. If a particular person, location, or event is portrayed (like Florence Nightingale), please research the historical significance of that figure, place, or occurrence.
More Art! theme 3: Provide contemporary literature about the therapeutic benefits of viewing (as opposed to making) art to advocate for purchasing and installing the proposed art where you work. You can also research how specific aspects of this work are therapeutic (consider content/subject, hues, lines, colors) and information about the benefits of viewing art for the target audience (ex. office workers, pediatric patients, etc.). Explain why this work is the best choice for your specific target audience/location
