Finding articles through the Resnick Library is easy! The fastest, most efficient way to find articles on your topic is by searching our library databases. Databases contain journals which contain articles that you need for your research.
Try the MILO search box below, which will search many databases at once, or take a look at this list of databases for History & Multicultural Topics.
Some of those history databases are highlighted in the box on the left.
Don't forget, you can contact a librarian for assistance with choosing keywords and finding articles.
Tip #1 - Break it down into simple keywords.
Typing your entire research question into the search box will only confuse the database! Instead, use only the words that represent the most important components of the thing you're looking for.
Example: Instead of searching for "effects of the American invasion of Iraq", narrow it down to "America" and "Iraq invasion" at first. You can add in other more specific terms about the effects you want to know about later.
Tip #2 - Brainstorm synonyms.
Databases are usually pretty good at bringing you relevant results, but sometimes making small changes to your keywords can bring you things you were missing. Brainstorm a list of keywords BEFORE you do any searching, and try combining them in different ways to see how it changes your results. You might have some searches that fail, but you might also find some results you wouldn't have otherwise!
Example: If one of your keywords is "America", try replacing it with "United States" to see if it changes your results.
Tip #3 - Combine keywords using AND and OR.
If you include the word AND in your search, it tells the database that your results must contain both of the keywords you mention.
Example: A search for "Iraq AND invasion" tells the database that you want resources about Iraq and that they must also include information about invasion. This search would likely give you results about the American invasion of Iraq in 2003, but might also include some information about Iraq invading Kuwait in 1990 (after all, you only specified that it needed to be about Iraq and an invasion!). If you wanted to narrow your results even further, you could search for "Iraq AND invasion AND America".
The word OR can be used in a similar way, but this is most useful when you want to include more than one keyword that means roughly the same thing.
Example: Searching for "America OR United States OR USA" would pull up any results that contain one or more of these terms.
HINT: You can also combine these techniques. The sample search below would tell the database that results must mention Iraq invasion, as well as mentioning either America or the United States (or both!)
